Unlocking Open Finance innovation: The Directory trust framework

By Ellie Duncan | 19 February 2026

As we witness the transformation of the financial ecosystem, there’s a critical infrastructure component that often goes unrecognized, yet serves as the bedrock of Open Finance: the Directory service.

Today’s ecosystem includes third party providers (TPPs), payment initiation services, account information providers, and digital wallets — all requiring secure access to financial data and services. This expansion brings tremendous opportunity, but also fundamental questions:

  • Who is licensed to operate?
  • Who has been properly vetted?
  • Who should have access to what data and services?

This is where Directory services become absolutely essential. They function as the authoritative source of truth — the definitive registry that establishes trust and enables secure interoperability across the entire Open Finance ecosystem.

Banfico is thrilled to be delivering a keynote on this topic at Open Banking Expo Canada 2026. This is a very important conversation for our industry right now.

As we build the future of financial services, understanding and implementing robust Directory services isn’t optional — it’s foundational.

Banfico is sponsoring the Open Finance Stage at Open Banking Expo Canada 2026 on March 5 at the MTCC in Toronto. Paulo Barbosa, Banfico’s chief operating officer, will deliver a presentation on the Open Finance Stage, ‘No directory, no trust: The hidden foundation of Open Finance’.
